Abstract
The so-called "probability density" plot is not a useful display of single grain fission track ages. It is not a kernel density estimate in the usual sense and the density function that it estimates has no simple interpretation in terms of the true grain ages. As a method of combining information it is unsound. Even viewed as an empirical data analytic tool, it is of little value and is likely to be misleading. It is therefore not recommended. Statistical theory and practical examples are used to justify this conclusion. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.All rights reserved.
