Abstract
This chapter discusses a Yiddish comedy by the author Haim Betsalel Grinberg, 'Bintshe the most pious woman', published in Warsaw in 1883. It argues that this rare example of folk literature is a mirror of Jewish humour and of a growing self-consciousness of those living in this first modern Jewish metropolis.
