Abstract

The iBSc in Primary Health Care was established in 1996 by a group of senior academic GPs at UCL. This iBSc offers a unique learning experience which involves on-going clinical experience (attached to a London general practice) as well as the acquisition of academic skills relevant to a career in clinical medicine. It is made up of five taught modules and a research module which is the largest component of the course. We aim to present: • The outcome/output of the last 15 years number of graduates n= [Nearly 20% of students have gained 1st class honours degrees and just under 80% of students have obtained an upper second (or higher) class degrees] • Projects which have been completed and x published • How recent institutional (UCL) changes affect the program o No further ‘external’ students o Change from “intercalated” to “integrated” BSc • Perhaps the ultimate ‘outcome’ of such a course would be to examine what has happened to our graduates. MG is a graduate of the course and now an academic GP. We are planning this. In the meantime we wish to present our data so far, what makes the course unique and what is challenging in these current times. Summary The iBSc in Primary Health Care is the UK’s longest running clinically-oriented Primary Care BSc. There is evidence that it develops a deeper understanding of primary health care, facilitates independent research skills while maintaining clinical skills and, importantly, students enjoy it. We want to sustain the iBSc but in such times student recruitment remains a challenge.
