Abstract

Constructed wetlands are an effective and low-cost treatment system for a wide variety of effluents of differing flows and concentrations. The applications of this technology described in this paper are for domestic wastewater and these systems have been shown to be efficient for removal of pathogens, toxic substances, organic material and nutrients. However, for the efficient functioning of the system, the aggregate for the bed must be carefully selected and planted with reeds, and once in operation the vegetation needs to be adequately maintained. This article describes experiences of the employment of constructed wetlands in various countries (Senegal, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Nepal and Brazil) with the aim to highlight the potential and limitations for the application of constructed wetlands for the treatment of domestic wastewater from small communities
