Scanning microscopy is increasingly being used because of its advantages over conventional microscopy, e. g. as improved resolution and subsurface imaging. Until recently the image was displayed on a continually refreshed long-persistance crt. However, continuing reductions in memory costs are now permitting the economical incorporation of digital framestores which, together with low cost microprocessors, allow digital image processing techniques to be applied.
