The pursuit of loosest packing.

We combine X-ray Computed Tomography data from real experimental samples with Discrete Element Method simulations to investigate the limiting packing fraction for the loosest mechanically-stable disordered packing. We establish a possible lower bound at packing fraction ̃ 53%. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.
