Abstract
This article explores the rivalry between the sixteenth-century chroniclers Richard Grafton and John Stow, using manuscript sources that include Stow's extensive annotation in a copy of Grafton's 1570 Abridgement of the Chronicles. Stow's forthright criticisms of Grafton's text are accompanied by a brief autobiographical report that provides new details concerning his own examination before the High Commission in late 1570 or shortly thereafter.
