Abstract

Opinion has been divided on the possibility that activity of retinal ganglion cells may be investigated by the pattern electroretinogram. We therefore investigated the distribution of its components in relation to that of the nuclear layer thickness in three concentric retinal zones. Two previous reports described how, by applying Fourier theory to the retinal image, the pattern electroretinogram elicited by the onset of checkerboard patterns, could be analysed by computation into complementary components. These were a retinal illuminance response (RIR), and a pattern specific response (PSR), which was assumed to reflect the activity of neurons with circularly organised inhibitory receptive fields. The spatial band-pass curves of these PSRs were distorted by optical degradation and their true form could not be determined until the function relating PSR amplitude to retinal stimulus contrast was available. We have now established the form of these contrast functions in twenty normal eyes, enabling us to compute the isocontrast, or neural PSR for different retinal zones. The spatial frequencies giving maximal amplitude fall off linearly from the fovea in a similar manner to ganglion cell receptive field centre diameters. The negative transient of the PSR is shown to be maximal for 3.5 min checks in central vision and its distribution closely resembles that of the thickness of the retinal ganglion cell layer. The RIR occurs a few milliseconds earlier and its distribution similarly corresponds to the thickness variations in the inner nuclear layer.
