Abstract
Lewes, George Henry (1817–1878), writer, was born in London on 18 April 1817, the youngest of the three sons of John Lee Lewes (1776–1831) and Elizabeth Ashweek (1786–1870), and grandson of the comic actor Charles Lee Lewes (1740–1803), famous for playing the part of Bobadil in Ben Jonson's Every Man in his Humour.
