Abstract

With coronary heart disease the leading cause of death in the UK, there is an urgent need for novel strategies capable of protecting the heart from the damage sustained during an acute myocardial infarction. Ischaemic preconditioning and the more recendy described phenomenon, ischaemic postconditioning, represent two such cardioprotective interventions. This article provides a brief introduction to ischaemic conditioning and reviews its potential in patients with diabetes, in whom coronary heart disease is highly prevalent.
