Abstract

In an assessment of the radiological features of osteoarthritis, this study has shown that joint space loss is a reliable radiological marker of disease. Based on this, a simple scoring system has been developed using a set of 6 standard knee X-rays graded for joint space loss using a 0-5 scale. This scoring system has acceptable inter and intra observer reproducibility, comparable to that of the Kellgren and Lawrence scoring system. The major advantage of this system is that it is able to assess the same radiological feature throughout the range of disease. This simple scoring system is sensitive enough to detect change in cases of osteoarthritis over a two year period. It is easy to use for radiologists and metrologists alike, and can be applied to the assessment of other joints. As such, it is a useful addition to available scoring systems.
