Abstract

Developmental dyslexia has been defined as a specific impairment in learning to read, despite normal intelligence and adequate reading instruction. There is increasing agreement that the major difficulty in dyslexia relates to deficits in phonological processing. The advent of neuroimaging techniques has provided the means to investigate the neural basis of phonological processing in dyslexia, with the majority of studies reporting reduced activation of the left temporo-parietal cortex. In addition, these techniques have facilitated the investigation of other putative deficits in dyslexia, in both visual and auditory processing. The evidence for neurofunctional impairments in each of these domains are reviewed in turn. This chapter begins with a review of early functional imaging approaches to the study of developmental dyslexia. Then it considers, in detail, the results of more recent studies of reading and the phonological impairment in dyslexia. Furthermore, it discusses studies of visual and auditory processing. Neuroimaging techniques, together with recent approaches provide a real opportunity to determine how differences in brain function relate to the etiology of dyslexia at both the biological and cognitive levels. © 2004 Elsevier Inc.
