Abstract

Irrational railway route selection damages ecological environment, increases air pollution, spoils natural scenery and produces much noise. A study is made on a China-catering assessment system for the environmental impact in railway route selection using the graphic overlay method based on the geographic information system (GIS). Four environmental impact factors, namely atmosphere, noise, ecology and landscape, are selected for assessment. Different weights are given, graphics of area sensitivity levels are compiled. After they are weighted, complex graphics are obtained, thus finding the least environment-sensitive corridor and route options for design. Based on a real case, environmental impact values are calculated for three options, from which an optimal option can be selected.
