Abstract

The magnetic structure and excitations of praseodymium are reviewed. Two phenomena which cannot be understood within the standard model of rare earth magnetism are discussed. These are the quasielastic peak which is present in both the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, and the excitations which accompany the crystal field excitations near the Brillouin zone centre. We also review the properties of the localised moment compound UPd3, and discuss the nature of the quadrupolar phases observed in this system.
