In this paper, Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structures have been applied in the design of photonic antennas integrated with optical transducers, namely quantum well asymmetric Fabry-Perot modulator/detectors (AFPMs). A circular polarized microstrip patch antenna operating at 5.2 GHz is designed and fabricated to host the AFPM. In order to minimize the backward radiation as well as to improve the broadside gain, an array of split ring resonators (SRRs) is incorporated to make it an EBG antenna. It is demonstrated that about 6 dB increase in path gain can be achieved with the proposed EBG antenna (about 2 dB contribution) and the subsequent packaging technique.
