Abstract

A robust and flexible analytical approach has been developed for estimating the origin-destination matrices from traffic counts. The approach combines a variety of methods which accommodate uncertainty in each prior estimate of the trip matrix and the traffic counts and a broad view of the process of matrix estimation to formulate a joint objective function for a mathematical optimization formulation. This approach has been found to perform well in networks where traffic congestion influences the assignment. An objective criterion is presented for the selection of importance weights for each of the data used. Mathematical analyses were also used to determine several important properties of the estimation process.
