Abstract

Mearsurements are presented of the peak velocities occurring in the wave flow field around circular cylinders. Vortex shedding patterns, peculiar to this type of flow were shown in extensive previous research to produce large transverse lift forces on the generating cylinder. The pairing and cyclical migration of these vortices also induce strong secondary flow fields which are superimposed on the primary flow. The present results provide quantitative evidence, for the first time, that under certain wave conditions, this superposition process can generate greatly enhanced peak velocity magnitudes in the near cylinder flow field.
