Abstract

The paper is concerned with the hydrodynamic forces applied to a horizontal structural member or pipeline by orbital wave flow. Force measurements were made on both a smooth and rough surfaced horizontal circular cylinder for a range of elliptical orbital flows between plane oscillatory conditions encountered near the bed and the near circular orbital wave motion occurring in deep water conditions. The observations indicate that as the aspect ratio of the elliptical motion is increased profound changes occur in the near cylinder flow structure with a progressive decrease in the resultant forces applied to the cylinder. These forces are shown to approximately halve in magnitude between the bounding plane and circular oscillatory flow states. Regular vortex shedding was observed under circular orbital flow conditions with a Strouhal number close to the steady flow value.
