Abstract

Takes stock of the situation that, despite escalating technical competence in urban modelling, problems in cities have worsened. Re-states the six basic dimensions of model design and then evaluates the capacity of mainstream disciplines to sustain urban modelling. Recent developments in model-based analysis suggest that progress is possible, however, the so-called radical critique suggests that sophisticated modelling is not essential for an understanding of inner-city problems.-A.F.Pitty
