Abstract

The use of a fast flame-ionisation detector (FID) system for measuring hydrocarbon (HC) levels in spark-ignition (SI) engine cylinders is described. The system allows the hydrocarbon level in each engine cycle to be measured. Results obtained with this system show: (a) in-cylinder excursions of air:fuel ratio after sudden throttle opening; (b) the amount of trapped combustion residuals in the cylinder during low-load low-speed running, and the effect of the residuals on combustion.
