Abstract

Through recent exchanges in the press, proponents of the New Urbanism and Secured by Design schools of thought have raised the old issue of how to best design urban places to promote safety and security in streets and enclaves. Unfortunately, neither camp has yet produced thorough and convincing evidence to support its position. 'Space Syntax', developed by Bill Hillier and his colleagues at University College London, provides an independent, evidence-based approach to the issue.
