Abstract

Decision support systems help clinicians make use of a super-abundance of information by organizing the selection and presentation of information. A new generic architecture has been developed for decision support systems in which a model of decision-making and of image representation provides the framework for combining symbolic knowledge and information derived from digital image processing. The architecture is currently being used in the area of mammography and is intended to support the classification of microcalcification as malignant or benign. It is also being used in the area of childhood abdominal tumors and is intended to support the staging and assessment of treatment response on the basis of computerized tomography scans.
