In 2005, it is taken for granted that patients may browse the Internet for information about their condition, contact other sufferers by email, send an email to their doctor, complete computer interviews giving a preliminary diagnosis and advice before the consultation, or use interactive TV in the home or touch screen kiosks in the supermarket to get health information. Patients may be given an `information prescription’ by their GP to go to the library to research their condition. The UK government uses all forms of media to promote a healthier diet Patients may log on to their medical record via the Internet and add details from home blood glucose monitoring. This chapter seeks to describe how six different strands of work have come together, influenced by economics, policy, developments in technology, and the media, over the last 40 years to form this field of Consumer Heath Informatics.
