Abstract

Serum-resistant Escherichia coli LP1674 (serotype 07:K1) cells were converted to serum-susceptible forms following growth in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of mecillinam. Growth in mecillinam-containing media resulted in a reduction in the amount of O-specific side-chain material associated with lipopolysaccharide and in the amount of K1 acidic exopolysaccharide that could be extracted from the cell mass. The outer membrane protein profiles of mecillinam-grown cells differed from control cells in only minor ways. Growth in the presence of sublethal concentrations of mecillinam appears, therefore, to suppress the formation or expression of polysaccharide-containing E. coli envelope components thought to play a role in the determination of serum resistance.
