Abstract
The objective of this paper is to assess the determinants of student achievements in Morocco. This study is of great interest given the deterioration of educational quality in this country and the absence of major studies that assess its educational system. The work we are undertaking seeks to shed light on the factors that explain student achievements; these include school environment and peer group characteristics in addition to the socio-economic background of the student. Our study utilizes the National Survey for the Assessment of Achievements 2008 (Programme National d’Evaluation des Acquis), and estimates an education production function which has for an output the score by discipline and level. It also provides a new approach that takes into account methodological problems, corrects the various biases and generates consistent results. The results of the various estimates indicate that student background plays a significant role in their academic performances. For instance, grade repetition has a negative influence on student achievements and the same applies for delayed entry, and the lack of material and cultural inputs, etc. Another important result concerns the influence of peer characteristics on student performances.
