Draws on original research with SENCOs in mainstream primary and secondary schools in two unitary authorities. All SENCOs were sent questionnaires and some were interviewed around the changes in their role, the pressures of the job, the role of senior management re support and funding, and the changing legal position of SENCOs. The article was highlighted as an example of 'good quality research' by an international group of researchers seeking to identify 'good' research.
